Cocodiethanolamide (CDEA)

Cocodietha nolamide, also known as cocamide DEA or coconut diethanolamide, is a type of non-ionic surfactant derived from coconut oil.It is commonly used in the formulation of various personal care and household products such as shampoos, hand soaps, dishwashing liquids, and laundry detergents.

Its chemical structure includes a hydrophilic (water-attracting) head and a lipophilic (oil-attracting) tail, which allows it to effectively lower the surface tension between water and oils or dirt, facilitating their removal during cleaning. Cocodiethanolamide acts as a foaming agent and thickener, helping to create a rich lather and improve the viscosity of liquid products.

Description

In addition to its role in cleaning formulations, cocodiethanolamide also serves as a stabilizer and emulsifier, helping to ensure the uniform distribution of ingredients in products such as creams and lotions.

While cocodiethanolamide is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products when formulated within regulatory guidelines, there has been some concern raised regarding potential contamination with nitrosamines, which are compounds that may have carcinogenic properties. Manufacturers take steps to minimize the risk of nitrosamine formation during the production process.
