Magnesium Chloride

Magnesium chloride (MgCl₂) is a colorless, hygroscopic, and highly soluble inorganic salt. It appears as a white, crystalline solid or flakes and is highly effective in its use across several industries. Magnesium chloride is typically produced by extracting it from sea water or salt lakes, or as a byproduct of magnesium metal production. It is used in both anhydrous (without water) and hydrated forms, depending on its application.

Uses of Magnesium Chloride

1. De-icing & Anti-icing – Widely used for road de-icing and anti-icing in colder regions due to its ability to lower the freezing point of water. It helps to melt snow and ice on roads and sidewalks.
2. Dust Control – Used in dust suppression on unpaved roads, construction sites, and mining operations. It binds dust particles, preventing them from becoming airborne.
3. Water Treatment – Acts as a coagulant in water treatment plants, aiding in the removal of suspended particles and impurities.
4. Agriculture – Used in fertilizers and as a soil conditioner, providing magnesium for plants and improving soil structure.
5. Food Industry – Magnesium chloride is used as a coagulant in the production of tofu and other food processing applications.
6. Pharmaceuticals – Used in the preparation of medicines, particularly as a source of magnesium in supplements.
