It appears as a white to pale yellow crystalline powder, freely soluble in water, with a pH of 2.2–2.5 in a 5% solution. It has low moisture content (loss on drying ≤ 0.4%), minimal impurities (heavy metals ≤ 10 ppm), and residue on ignition ≤ 0.1%, making it suitable for food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic use.
